Thread 1 The Machine

Frame the engine as a guessing machine. It read 79 sentences — that is its whole world — and it remembers which words came after which. When you give it some words, it guesses the next one, writes it down, and guesses again, one word at a time, like a friend finishing your sentence. There are two lessons here: the machine turns words into numbers (machines are wonderful at counting and terrible at everything else), and it doesn't understand the story — it only remembers what usually comes next.

Thread 2 The Mathematics

This is tally marks and picture graphs. In our reading book, what word comes after "the"? Tally the answers on the board: dog ||, cat |, end |||. Which is the best guess? The engine's gauge tubes (Station VI) are exactly this tally, drawn as a graph — a taller tube means "it happened more often, so I'll guess it more often."

Thread 3 The True History

Nearly two hundred years ago — before electric lights, when machines ran on cranks and steam — an Englishman named Charles Babbage planned a calculating machine made of thousands of brass gears, as big as a room. His friend Ada Lovelace, the daughter of a famous poet, understood something even he hadn't quite said out loud: a machine like that wouldn't have to stop at numbers. It might work with letters, or even music. People thought these were just dreams. The machine was never finished while they lived — but when a museum finally built one from Babbage's own drawings, about thirty-five years ago, it worked.

Thread 4 Can a Machine Think?

Ada Lovelace said something famous about the machine, which you can give students almost in her own words: "It can only do what we know how to tell it to do." Circle question, no right answer required: when the machine writes a sentence, did it think of it? Follow-ups that land at this age: Did the machine ever learn anything, the way you learned to ride a bike? Do you only do what people tell you to do? What's different?

Thread 5 At the Cabinet

• The human language engine. Circle game: build a story one word per child, no planning ahead. That rule — each word chosen only from what came before — is exactly how the engine writes. Then watch the real engine do it (sound on, Wait at each station ticked).
• Call the lottery. At Station VI, have the class read the tallest tube aloud and predict the winner before the drum draws. Sometimes the little tube wins — those are the “dice”, and children should find it delightfully unfair.
• The whole dictionary in a drawer. Open the Type Drawer: every word it can ever say fits on one screen. Ask: could it say your name? Then type a child's name into the prompt and find it in the drawer, cut fresh and marked ✶ — a brand-new word the machine now holds but has never once seen used, so it can never guess it.
